JUNE 26, 1862:
The
Seven Days’ Battles (Day Two)---The Battle of Beaver Dam Creek (The Battle of
Mechanicsville; The Battle of Ellerson's Mill):
Robert
E. Lee went on the offensive, attempting to turn the Union right flank north of
the Chickahominy River. The battle quickly degenerated into a series of futile
Confederate assaults against the Union forces which occupied defensive works
behind Beaver Dam Creek. Confederate attacks were driven back with heavy
casualties. The Union lost 361 men, the Confederacy 1,500. Despite the fact that the battle was a Confederate
debacle, McClellan began to pull back his lines.
