JULY 9, 1862:
The Battle of
Tomkinsville, Kentucky. Colonel John
Hunt Morgan C.S.A. and his Light Brigade of 1,000 men raid the town, which is
garrisoned by 250 Union troops on sentry detail guarding supplies and rail
lines. Morgan’s men overwhelm the Union troops, causing 100 casualties. Escaped
Yankees tell tales of a 10,000-man Rebel force in the area wreaking havoc. The next day, the Indiana Messenger describes the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry
as having been “cut to pieces” in the area.
