JUNE 25, 1862:
The
Seven Days’ Battles (Day One) ---The Battle of Oak Grove (The Battle of French’s Field; The Battle of King’s
School House):
In an attempt to gain ground in order to bring his siege
guns to bear on downtown Richmond, Union General McClellan orders an attack
across White Oak Swamp, and then, after the attack begins, belays the order,
only to reinstate it several hours later. Confederate resistance was fierce.
The Union line moved forward less than half a mile at a cost of 500 +
casualties to each side.
