Abby Howland Woolsey, a New York woman, reflects on the
recent defeats in the Seven Days’ Battles. She writes to her sister Eliza:
“…I have no question
that this and all other defeats are intended to drive us, as a nation, to a
higher moral ground in the conduct and purpose of this war. As things stand,
the South is fighting to maintain slavery, and the North is trying to fight so
as not to put it down. When this policy ceases, perhaps we shall begin to have
victory...”
