JUNE 17, 1862:
The
Battle of St. Charles, Arkansas. A naval engagement and infantry battle on
Arkansas’ White River pitted eight Union ships including the U.S.S. MOUND CITY,
against several Confederate shore guns. A Confederate gun hit the MOUND CITY's
steam boiler, causing an explosion which resulted in 105 of the 175 men aboard
being killed. The MOUND CITY was then towed back to Memphis, Tennessee and
repaired.
