JUNE 11, 1862:
After Stonewall Jackson’s brilliant Valley Campaign, Robert
E. Lee reinforces Stonewall’s army and orders him to move eastward to confront
the Union Army of the Potomac; however, using the Richmond newspapers as a
source of disinformation, he publicly announces that he is sending troops to
the Valley to bolster Jackson. Thus, Jackson’s sudden appearance on the
Peninsula shocks and frightens McClellan.
