MARCH 27, 1863:
U.S.
soldier Robert Gay of Indiana is
executed by firing squad for treason. Gay, while a POW of the Confederates,
renounced his allegiance to the United States. Later part of a prisoner
exchange, he was identified as a turncoat by other former POWs, tried and
convicted in a Court Martial. His last words were an apology for what he had
done. Gay’s execution was the first of its kind in the Western Theater.
