March 27, 1863---The execution of a turncoat

MARCH 27, 1863:

U.S. soldier Robert Gay of Indiana is executed by firing squad for treason. Gay, while a POW of the Confederates, renounced his allegiance to the United States. Later part of a prisoner exchange, he was identified as a turncoat by other former POWs, tried and convicted in a Court Martial. His last words were an apology for what he had done. Gay’s execution was the first of its kind in the Western Theater.
