April 9, 1863---The sinking of the U.S.S. GEORGE WASHINGTON
APRIL 9, 1863:
The U.S.S. GEORGE WASHINGTON is sunk by a Confederate shore
battery off Beaufort, South Carolina. The ship’s guns are salvaged and used by
the Confederacy.
