APRIL 13, 1863:
The
Battle of Bayou Teche, Louisiana (The Battle of Fort Bisland; The Battle of
Bethel Place).
Union troops, advancing north from New Orleans, are blocked from
their next objective, the city of Alexandria, Louisiana, by Fort Bisland in
Bayou Teche. Union and Confederate troops and gunboats exchange heavy fire all
day. A Union force flanks the fort. Hearing this, the Rebel Commander decides
to withdraw under cover of night, and the next day the Yankees occupy the
abandoned fort.
