APRIL 18, 1863:
The
Battle of Fayetteville, Arkansas:
A well-armed Union force comprised mostly of local Arkansans faces off against
a poorly-armed force Confederate force comprised mostly of local Arkansans in
northwest Arkansas. After a sharp firefight, the Union occupies Fayetteville.
On April 25, the Union Command orders the Fayetteville garrison to evacuate the
town, which is considered too exposed to attack.
