APRIL 14, 1863:
The
Battle of Irish Bend (The Battle of Nerson’s Woods; The Battle of Franklin,
Louisiana). Union troops, advancing north from Fort Bisland engage the same
rebel force which had withdrawn from the fort the night before. Again, a sharp
engagement ensues, involving the gunboats. After another six hour engagement,
the now-depleted Confederate force withdraws. The Union is now poised to retake
western Louisiana.
