JANUARY 10, 1861:
Florida secedes from the Union.
The delegates to
Florida’s secession convention, formally known as the “Convention of the People
of Florida,” assembled in Tallahassee on January 3, 1861, to vote on secession.
Of the 69 delegates eligible to vote for the adoption of an ordinance of
secession on January 10, 1861, 62 voted yea and seven voted nay.
Only seven of the
delegates to the Convention were native Floridians. Most were from Georgia (22)
and South Carolina (14). 23 of the delegates were farmers or planters, and fifty-one
of the 69 owned slaves. Several of the “nays” signed the Ordinance of Secession
in solidarity with their compatriots as there are 65 signatures on the
Ordinance of Secession.
