AUGUST 21,
1831:
Nat Turner, a literate slave
in Virginia, leads 75 fellow slaves in a rebellion, killing some 65 whites in
72 hours. The rebellion, carried out with axes and hatchets, is brutally
suppressed. Almost 300 slaves are either convicted or lynched in the wake of
the rebellion, many having never participated. Turner himself is captured on October 30th,
is tried, convicted and executed on November 11th, and his body is burned
and torn to pieces.
After Turner’s death,
laws against the educating of blacks are made far more stringent, and tools and
weapons are required to be kept under lock and key.
