MARCH 9, 1861:
The Confederate Congress passes a “Coinage Bill”
establishing a uniform Confederate currency system. The United States has no such uniform system until later in the conflict.
The Confederate $1000 bill
featured the portraits of U.S. President Andrew Jackson and his Vice-President,
John C. Calhoun, both born within the geographic bounds of the new Confederacy.
For lack of minting facilities in the South, the bills themselves were printed
by the National Bank Note Company in New York City, and were smuggled south for
distribution.
