Early 1861---Jefferson Davis is named Provisional President of the Confederate States of America; Tennessee rejects secession



 FEBRUARY 9, 1861:        

 The Montgomery Convention selects Jefferson Davis to be head of the new Provisional Government of the Confederate States of America. Alexander Stephens is chosen as Vice-President. 




On this same day, Tennessee voters reject a secession ordinance.
