MAY 25, 1856:
The Pottawatomie Massacre. The ardent abolitionist John
Brown raids the pro-slavery town ofPottawatomie,
Kansas and kills five settlers in retaliation for the sacking of Lawrence,
Kansas on the 21st of May.
