August 4, 1862---Mr. Lincoln makes a modern Officer Corps

AUGUST 4, 1862:

The Union Army begins to reorganize. President Abraham Lincoln issues orders that Regular Army commanders are to begin the process of reassigning or relieving so-called “political generals,” elected officers, and the like.  The goal is to weed out out the incompetents and the deadwood. However, political generals and elected officers were often well-connected, popular, and sometimes even competent, so this plan was neither entirely successful, nor efficient in all quarters.
