AUGUST 4, 1862:
The Union
Army begins to reorganize. President Abraham Lincoln issues orders
that Regular Army commanders are to begin the process of reassigning or
relieving so-called “political generals,” elected officers, and the like. The goal is to weed out out the incompetents
and the deadwood. However, political generals and elected officers were often
well-connected, popular, and sometimes even competent, so this plan was neither
entirely successful, nor efficient in all quarters.
