August 19, 1862---Southern Baptists to C.S.A.: "Respect the Sabbath!"

AUGUST 19, 1862:     

The Southern Baptist Convention publishes an objection to the Confederacy’s ongoing violations of the Sabbath for military purposes. Prior to the war, the Southern Baptist Church had been among the strongest organized advocates of the separation of Church and State.
