August 1, 1862---Salmon P. Chase earns a dollar
AUGUST 1, 1862:
The
United States issues its first One Dollar bill. Secretary of the Treasury
Salmon P. Chase’s portrait adorns the first dollar. He would later appear on
the $10,000 bill.
