AUGUST 15, 1862:
The
Battle of Lone Jack, Missouri. A two-day battle which pitted 800 Yankees
against 1,600 Rebels. The Union won the first skirmish, which had the element
of surprise, but on the morning of the 16th, the Confederates
reorganized and were reinforced by 3,000 additional troops. Outnumbered at
roughly 6-to-1, the Union force retired in order. Almost immediately after this
battle, a very large Union force arrived, dispersed the Confederates, and took
and held the town permanently.
