August 27, 1862---McClellan to Lincoln: "Let Pope get out of his own scrape."

AUGUST 27, 1862:

After the loss of Manassas Junction, General John Pope U.S.A. withdraws from the Rappahannock River. Pope has no Intelligence, and does not realize that roughly half the Confederate army is between his position and Washington, D. C.. General McClellan, who is aware of Confederate movements, says nothing. “Let Pope get out of his own scrape,” he later advises President Lincoln.
