AUGUST 3, 1862:
A sharp
skirmish took place at L’Anguille Ferry, just north of Marianna (Lee County),
Arkansas. The skirmish was a delayed direct response to a Union victory at
Hill’s Plantation, which took place July 7th. The Confederates blunted any
local Union assaults thereafter, causing Union troops in eastern Arkansas to
remain near their base on the Mississippi River until the following summer when
Vicksburg fell.
Union losses totaled seventeen killed, forty wounded,
twenty-five captured, and eight missing. Confederate losses were minimal.
