August 16, 1862---McClellan turns tail and plots against Pope

AUGUST 16, 1862:

General George McClellan completes the evacuation by sea of Harrison's Landing on the Virginia Peninsula. His men land at Aquia Creek, Virginia and Alexandria, Virginia, within a few days. Most are reassigned to John Pope's Army of Virginia. This causes McClellan to plot for Pope’s downfall, which McClellan manages, at the cost of hundreds of young soldiers’ lives.
