August 11, 1862---The First Battle of Independence Missouri



AUGUST 11, 1862:     

 The First Battle of Independence, Missouri. A Confederate force, including the partisan leader William Quantrill, attacks the Union Army camp in town in the small hours, killing many sleeping men. The rest of the Union force resisted, but either fled or were captured. Confederate guerrilla George Todd executed a number of Union soldiers summarily.
