MARCH 14, 1862:
The
Battle of New Bern, North Carolina.
The U.S. Army's Coast Division accompanied
by armed vessels from the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, were opposed by
an undermanned and badly trained Confederate force of North Carolina soldiers
and local militia. When their line was breached, many of the defenders broke
and ran, forcing a general retreat of the entire Confederate force to Kinston,
more than 30 miles away. New Bern came under Federal control, and remained so
for the rest of the war. The Confederacy lost yet another outlet to the sea.
