FEBRUARY 11, 1862:
The
Battle of Fort Donelson (Day One): A major Civil War battle and a Union victory,
the Battle of Fort Donelson followed immediately upon the fall of Fort Henry on
February 6th. After Fort Henry (on the Mississippi River) fell, the
uncaptured Confederate forces withdrew overland to Fort Donelson (on the
Cumberland River), some 12 miles away). Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant
begins to invest Fort Donelson.
