FEBRUARY 20, 1862:
William Wallace "Willie" Lincoln (December 21,
1850 – February 20, 1862), the third son of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd
Lincoln, dies at the age of 11 as a result of Typhoid Fever contracted around
Christmas. The Lincolns are all devastated, and for a time, the anguished President
contemplates sending the hysterically distraught Mary to a sanitarium.
On this
same day, President Jefferson Davis of the Confederacy, declares February 28th
to be a “Day of Public Prayer, Humiliation, and Fasting.”
