MARCH 12, 1862:
The
periodical Southern Confederacy
refers to the “dreadful consequences in
store for us…[in] the filthy embrace
of the North.” However, it admits there are a “few” traitors among its
readers.
In point of fact and in the face of growing shortages and military
setbacks, growing numbers of Southerners were wearying of the war and the
Confederate government, if not yearning for reunification.
