FEBRUARY 10, 1862:
The
Battle of Elizabeth City, North Carolina:
Following their victory on Roanoke
Island, the Union purposed to cut off yet another Confederate outlet to the
sea. The participants were the same Union vessels that had taken Roanoke Island
two days before, opposed by the remaining vessels of the Confederate Navy's
Mosquito Fleet; the latter were supported by a shore-based battery of four guns
at Cobb's Point (now called Cobb Point). The shore battery was rendered
irrelevant by range, and the Union’s capital ships quickly destroyed a large
portion of the Mosquito Fleet.
The result was a Union victory, with Elizabeth
City and its nearby waters in Federal possession, and the Confederate fleet
captured, sunk, or dispersed. The North River and the Pasquotank River were
both closed off by the Union, leading to the fall of Norfolk, Virginia in May.
