JANUARY 9, 1862:
The Battle Of Middle Creek: In bitterly cold weather a Union
detachment of 1,500 engages with Confederate cavalry of 2,500 in eastern
Kentucky, manages to seize their stores, and forces them to retire into extreme
southeastern Kentucky. Although a small and forgotten battle, Middle Creek, and
Big Sandy River, after it, decided Union control of the region for most of
1862.
