DECEMBER 13, 1861:
The
Battle of Allegheny Mountain: Confederate forces occupied the summit of
Allegheny Mountain in western Virginia. In bright sunlight punctuated by a
piercing winter wind at the top of the mountain (4000 feet), Union forces
attacked the position. Fighting continued until Confederate artillery drove the
Federals back. However, Confederate losses were relatively high for a small
engagement: 150 killed, wounded or missing.
