January 14, 1862---In the Dry Tortugas

JANUARY 14, 1862:            

 The U.S. reinforces Fort Zachary Taylor in the Dry Tortugas of the Florida Keys, near Key West. Fort Zachary Taylor is used as the Union’s maximum security prison for rebels. Dr. Samuel Mudd is imprisoned there after the murder of President Lincoln.
