January 30, 1862---U.S.S MONITOR is launched in Brooklyn, N.Y.

 JANUARY 30, 1862:            

The U.S.S. MONITOR is launched in Brooklyn, New York. The “cheesebox on a raft” was to revolutionize naval warfare. With its low freeboard, rotating turret, heavy armor plate, and speed, it was a vast improvement over the slow-moving “Pook’s Turtles” already in use on the western rivers.
