December 4, 1861---A former U.S. Vice President becomes a Confederate
DECEMBER 4, 1861:
John
C. Breckenridge, former U.S. Vice-President and current Senator from Kentucky,
announces he is leaving the Senate for service with the C.S.A. The Senate
refuses his resignation, and then expels him.
