NOVEMBER 25, 1862:
The parts
for the first pontoon bridge over the Rappahannock River arrive in General
Burnside’s camp. Although encouraged to build the bridge and begin moving
troops over the river, Burnside demurs; he wants to wait for the rest of the
bridges, and besides, he has given his word that the city can be evacuated
before it is occupied. He seems oblivious to the fact that Lee’s army is
arriving in strength every day.
