NOVEMBER 15, 1862:
Rear
Admiral John Dahlgren, the inventor of the Dahlgren Gun, has been experimenting
with rocketry. He invites the President and the Cabinet to a demonstration. The
“Hale Rocket” malfunctions, nearly killing the spectators. Horrified that he
nearly won the war for the Confederacy in one explosive moment, Dahlgren
cancels all further U.S. Military rocket research. Real U.S. military interest
in rocketry will not resume until 1945.
