NOVEMBER 17, 1862:
The Army
of the Potomac, on its ill-starred autumn campaign, reaches Stafford’s Heights
on the far side of the Rappahannock River, overlooking Fredericksburg,
Virginia. A requisition order having gone astray, it is belatedly discovered
that the army has no pontoon bridges, boats or other equipment to cross the
river. The delay in crossing the Rappahannock gives the Army of Northern
Virginia time to prepare for the coming assault.
