NOVEMBER 19, 1862:
A
frustrated General Ambrose Burnside makes his headquarters at historic Chatham
Manor across the way from Fredericksburg. Daily, his army is piling up behind
him, but without the requisitioned pontoon bridges he does not want to risk
crossing the Rappahannock River. General Edwin Vose Sumner suggests fording the
river north of the city and taking Fredericksburg before the bulk of Lee’s army
arrives there, but Burnside elects to wait for the promised equipment.
