MAY 8, 1862:
The
Battle of McDowell (The Battle of Sitlington's Hill): Stonewall Jackson, with
6,000 men, cuts off a Union advance of 6,500 men into the Shenandoah Valley by
intercepting troops sent from McDowell to take Sitlington’s Hill, a vista which
would have given the Union control of that area of the Valley. A four hour long
artillery, cavalry, and infantry duel ensued. Although Confederate losses were
heavy (420 total, 116 killed), the Union (259 total, 34 killed) was unable to
take Sitlington’s Hill, and withdrew back to McDowell as dusk fell.
