MAY 7, 1862:
The
Battle of Eltham's Landing (The Battle of Barhamsville or The Battle of West
Point).
11,000 Union troops land
at West Point, Virginia in an attempt to cut off the Confederate retreat toward
Richmond. After an exchange of gunfire, the two sides disengaged; the 10,000
Confederates continued their withdrawal, while the Union troops fell back into
a defensive posture. The Union Army did not succeed in disrupting the
withdrawal and neither did it make any further attempts to do so.
