MAY 22, 1862:
General
McClellan stands in front of Richmond with 110,000 men. This massive Union army
has pinned General Joseph E. Johnston and the Confederates up against Richmond
with 72,000 men. But, all evidence to the contrary (such as reports of
Contrabands entering the lines, which he pointedly ignores), McClellan is
irrationally convinced that the Rebels have 160,000 men or more, and
remonstrates with Washington over and over again for reinforcements. President
Lincoln promises to send more troops, but advises General McClellan not to
delay. McClellan refuses to move.
