October 4, 1862---The strange surrender of Galveston TX

OCTOBER 4, 1862:

The First Battle of Galveston, Texas. The blockade ship USRC HARRIET LANE is sent into the harbor at Galveston to demand the surrender of the city. The Confederates refuse, and so Union Navy ships open fire.  After a brief bombardment, the Confederates ask for terms, but reject unconditional surrender. After a threat of additional bombardment, the Confederates agree to surrender if they are given four days to evacuate older men, women, children and immigrants from the city. The fall of Galveston meant that one more important Confederate port was lost.
