The
Northern States begin their midterm elections for seats in the House of
Representatives. Democrats score solid gains in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and
Pennsylvania. Iowa votes Republican. The Republican Party maintains control of
the House, frustrating Richmond’s hopes for a negotiated peace.
