DECEMBER 7, 1862:
The
Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas. Confederate General Hindman with 11,000 men
and Union General Blunt now reinforced, with 12,000 men meet in battle at
Prairie Grove. Although the battle itself is a tactical victory for the
Confederates, they are left without supplies, food, or ammunition, while
Blunt’s force is still bristling with bayonets. Hindman is forced to withdraw,
and northwestern Arkansas is returned to the Union. Casualties on both sides
are about 1,300 each.
