DECEMBER 19, 1862:
The
Battle of Jackson, Tennessee. After having successfully struck at Lexington,
General Nathan Bedford Forrest C.S.A. strikes at Jackson, Tennessee. In a
two–pronged attack, Forrest ties down the Union troops in town with heavy
skirmishing, while the remainder of his force tears up the tracks of the
Mississippi Central Railroad, interrupting Grant’s supply line.
On this same day, a Congressional delegation, manipulated by
Secretary of The Treasury Salmon P. Chase, demands Secretary of State William
H. Seward’s head on a platter in revenge for the defeat at Fredericksburg. In a
tense meeting, President Lincoln manages to expose Chase’s machinations,
turning the delegation against Chase. When both Chase and Seward proffer their
resignations, Lincoln refuses them both.
