MARCH 29, 1862:
General Samuel Heintzelman, acting on General McClellan’s
instructions, pushes a reconnaissance in force up the James Peninsula to
ascertain Confederate strength there. In his report, he tells McClellan that
General “Prince John” Magruder has only about 8,000 troops for sure, and
calculates that Magruder cannot have any more than 18,000.
