APRIL 1, 1862:
McClellan’s
Army of the Potomac, numbering 121,500 men, 25,000 horses and mules, and 300
cannon on 400 ships lands on the Virginia Peninsula. It is the largest amphibious
landing ever, anywhere, and remains so until D-Day, 78 years in the future. In
the face of this monstrous force, Richmonders begin to fear that all is lost.
Meanwhile, in the Shenandoah Valley, Stonewall Jackson retreats southward,
pressed by a newly reinforced Federal force under Nathaniel Banks.
