APRIL 11, 1862:
General Fitz-John Porter U.S.A. decides to ride in an
observation balloon alone when inventor Thaddeus Lowe takes a sick-day. In
flight, the balloon tether breaks, and Porter nearly crosses into enemy
territory. A last minute change in wind direction returned him to Union lines.
Also, on this day, the South has to suppress the Rockingham Rebellion in the
Shenandoah Valley, when Virginians, resentful of having to serve a stint in the
Confederate Army upon being mustered out of the Virginia State Militia take up
arms against the Stonewall Brigade.
Incidents of resistance spread throughout
the South as the first Confederate Draft comes into effect on this day.
