APRIL 10, 1862:
The Battle of Fort Pulaski (Savannah, Georgia): An extended
bombardment by Union ships firing the new 30 caliber Parrott Gun, which had a
rifled barrel and hence an extended range, blasted the fort into dust,
rendering masonry fortifications obsolete, and resulting in the loss of
Savannah for use as a blockade-runner’s port. The city itself remained in Rebel
hands, but it was bottled up.
