MARCH 24, 1862:
In response to the Union attack on New Smyrna Beach on March
22nd, the “Jacksonville Skirmish” was fought at the "brick church"
which stood in the area of West Duval and West Monroe Streets in Jacksonville,
Florida. Of the brick church, today only the cemetery remains.
A very minor
action, like most in Florida, the small Confederate force withdrew after
surprising (and bloodying) a Union picket outpost. Union control of
Jacksonville was never threatened.
